Mama Doc Medicine shipped from online retailers over the weekend. It’s been such an exciting time to hear from colleagues and friends all over the US reading the book. Much of the book content stems from writing I’ve shared here and I remain so thankful for all those who continue to help me learn how to translate science and health information.
Like every blogger on planet earth, I’m so thankful for comments on the blog. I learn a ton from parents, pediatricians, and all you experts here. Conversation can be exceptionally fruitful. As a tiny token of appreciation for the comments (you can also read about my appreciation in the Acknowledgment section of the book) I’m giving away 20 copies of the book to loyal followers and commenters. I’ll sign and endorse the book for you or for whomever you’d like!

I recommend your blog to so many! So excited about your book!

I’m a regular reader and commenter! Congratulations on your book. Is it valuable to someone whose kids are school-age already, or is it aimed at new parents? I’d like a copy, if and only if the former is true. π
Patsy Cadwell says
I was going to say toddlers vs. eating and when we should be worried. But I realized that you have 162 articles on toddlers. Your wisdom is GREATLY appreciated.
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
Picky eating is entirely normal during toddlerhood. I could do another post about it. YEARS ago I wrote about it in regards to the new “toddler formula” that was being advertised (in chocolate flavors, no less) which I felt preyed on parents to NORMAL kids. But another post about pickiness is a good idea. On the list! Thanks!!
Katie Painter says
Yes, I do want a copy of this book! I love your blog and posts on FB. I have a two year old and expecting a second in July. I appreciate a reliable source of kids health info online.
Tina Davenport richardson says
Avid reader of your blog, mama to one of your patients and scheduler for your appointments at TEC….does that qualify me. LOL. Very excited for your book! I’d love to see you post in the future about how to handle a sensitive child (age 4.75). Mine seems to be ultra sensitive.
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
Thanks, Tina. Personalities can enhance and get in the way of parents’s schemas for children’s lives. Have certainly lived-out that truth in my own life, too. It’s a great topic. Putting it on the list, too (which is a series of post-it notes in my office) π Many thanks for following along and all of your support

I went to Elliott Bay Books a few months ago to get your book (after I saw you mention it on FB) and was told I had to wait until March. I am happy March is almost here! I look forward to reading your wonderful advice in a different format; as a mom to a two-year-old, I have found your advice to be sensible and helpful.

I would love a copy! I confess, I never comment, but I read all the time, ever since you recommended it to me at one of my children’s check ups.
Kim Burlingham says
Heck yeah, I’m a loyal reader, a fellow mom and pediatrician. And my favorite thing to collect is autographs of famous people who have or are making the world a better place for our children and that’s you! Congratulations!
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
You’re very silly. Thanks, Dr Burlingham!
Nicki Solie says
I’m a reader and not one to usually comment but here goes. I like how the posts have a story to them and yet are short and to the point. As a mom of 2 boys (older ASD) and a daughter in the middle I can totally relate to many of the posts. And I know you to be a caring doctor as well as you have treated my daughter. Keep writing!
D C says
Hi Dr Swanson, Love your blog! I work as a nanny and am an aspiring pediatrician, just applying to medical school. Thank you for the variety of topics you cover- I am inspired by them all.
Robyn says
Your blog is my first piece of advice to any new mom. I love your balanced opinions, they way you ground your advice in data that resonates, and honesty with which you share the struggles we face as moms when making decisions for our children. After I had been bombarded by campaigning anti-vaccine moms, you gave me the confidence to vaccinate my babies. Your thoughts on life balance have been especially inspiring to me as a working mom. When you took a vacation “off the grid” in summer of ’12 I think, before it became trendy to do so, you inspired me to do the same. I’m thrilled to see you’ve published a book – congratulations, and thanks for being here for us!
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
Well, yes. I have done a number of digital sabbaticals but really do need to rethink how I can change the normal ways we live. It’s a good topic to return to. thanks for following along!
Renee Metty says
Really excited to read your book. Love the blog!
Tami says
I’ve been reading your blog since my son was born(2.5 years ago). It has provided me with solid advice as my son has grown. Many times I have found myself consulting precious posts in the middle of the night to see if what is happening is normal or something to worry about. I appreciate your perspective on vaccinating. I was thrilled an excited for you when you were able to share your thoughts at a TEDx conference. Thanks for taking time out of your day to write.
Melissa says
I’ve only commented once or twice, but I read your blog religiously. I’d love to win a copy of your book. Thanks!
Stephanie says
I’m a frequent reader and former nurse at Seattle children’s. I left lots of comments a few years ago when trying to figure things out with my first child, mostly reading with no comments since then. I always appreciate your perspective!
Becca says
I always appreciate your insights and refer other new moms to your blog. So excited for your book! I would love a copy. π
Trista says
Congrats on the book. I follow you on face book. Would love to have your book to read. I have been bringing my son down to children’s for the last month and I have nothing but wonderful things to say about the hospital and the doctors that work there. Every doctor I have met so far has treated my son like he is more than just a paitent. Thanks.
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
So glad to hear this. Thanks for sharing your experience
Marie says
A trusted friend sent me your way. I’m typically a non-commenting reader π
Veronica Parfait says
I would love a copy! Meeting you at a town hall talk lady year in Seattle helped make me feel confident in my choices for my (at the time) unborn child and as a new mom! Thank you for what you do and confidence and information you give to others!
Stacey says
I used to be a regular commenter but alas I had fallen behind π I do read your blog and Facebook posts regularly though! Of course my favorite interactions with you are in person π congrats on your book!!
BookMama says
I don’t comment as often as I would like to (I often read on the fly) but I don’t think I’ve missed a post, and I love reading you on Twitter, too. My children are 4, 8, and 12, and I appreciate that you cover topics that affect all age ranges.
I’d love to see a post dedicated to using car seats on airplanes, even for the under-2 crowd who can legally (but not safely) be “lap babies.”
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
Okay! Was going to write about this a few years back when a NYT article mentioned “kid free flights” as I was outraged….but with the recent news about turbulence it’s a really great topic to write about. on the list! Thanks for all your following and all the interactions on twitter, too.
Susannah Fox says
I’ll get in on this! Can’t wait to read it and share your wisdom.
Sarah Scroggins says
I read your blog all the time but admit I don’t comment! And love sharing what you have to say. π
Margie says
Long time reader, not a commenter. Love reading your blog – would love a copy of your book. I’m also trying to figure out a way to see you at the conference in the Chicagoland area on the 8th, but a 3 year old and a 12 month old might not cooperate. π
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
Margie, please come! First 300 people at the book signing get a free copy — so this is your easy way out!! π If you do come, please introduce yourself.
The Expo is kid friendly. I’m giving a talk at 11am and then doing a book signing at 12pm. Info on the book signing: https://www.healthychildrenexpo.org/Content/Networking-Opportunities/6_26/

We love following your blog, Twitter and Facebook. Especially since we are local to you. I don’t think that we have missed a local book signing, have we? Our families appreciate your honest approach and sharing as a Mom as well as pediatrician. I like your idea of the “Positivity Wall”. That just gave me a fun idea for patient testimonials. Thanks π
Allison Hinds says
I’m still reading your blog and find your posts helpful and encouraging in raising my two boys. We miss seeing you as our ped and would love to have your book!
Brianna says
Thanks for all you address in your blog and congrats on your book! I’ve only commented once or twice, but have been reading for 4+ years. One major impact you/your blog made on our family was your Jan 2010 post on keeping kids rear-facing until 2. Our youngest was 6 months old at the time and it was the first I had heard of it – thanks to you, I read more about it and agreed with you. We were one of the only people we knew (in 2010) that kept their kid rear-facing until 2. I referred doubting grandparents and friends to your blog, and stuck true to safety vs what the crowd was doing (or what we did for our first child, whom we turned facing forward on his first birthday). Thankfully we never had any accidents, and I truly felt our daughter was safer thanks to having read your blog. I’ve enjoyed many other posts, as well, but that one made an impression and goes way back to the early days of reading your posts…and made a lifelong impact, so thanks!
Ailie says
Congratulations on the book! I am not a regular commenter, but I am a regular reader. I met you when I was a nurse at Seattle Children’s from 2001-2005. I have since moved and went on to have my own children and I now read your blog as a Mom wanting to stay informed on the latest current topics and research. I always recommend your blog to new Moms because I love your balanced approach. Thank you for your help and encouragement in this journey of parenthood!
Jules says
I LOVE THESE COMMENTS TOO! I can only imagine how helpful it is to hear from your readers–there are so many themes here in terms of balanced, candid, knowledgeable–my only regret is that I will be missing you when you’re in Chicago :(. BOO. CONGRATS AGAIN!
Janet Klinger says
Congratulations on this terrific book! I didn’t realize how useful it would be to our family with our girl already being 9. Plenty of info there to grow with. For me too as I do try to improve daily the balance of career and parenting. I just received my copies from the publisher, and the book is surely something to be proud of.
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
So kind, Janet! Readers should know that the cover photo with my son was taken at your studio on a random day in July when a friend convinced me to go to one of your “happy hour” mom photo shoots. SO THRILLED I DID. I treasure those photos….
Many thanks for all.

Dr. Swanson,
It’s probably too late to have a shot at a book, but I thought I would give it a try anyway. My wife and I, along with many of my coworkers, have been following your blog since we had the very fortunate experience of getting to hear you speak at the Idaho Shot Smarts conference in 2012. With two young kids at home (3 and 1 years), my wife and I really appreciate all of the knowledge and first hand experiences that you are able to share. We have certainly applied a lot of your advice when it comes to parenting, most notably with tantrums and sleep schedules. Rest assured, if we are unable to receive a free book we will absolutely be looking forward to purchasing one. Thanks for all that you have done to make our lives easier!
Lexie says
I have really enjoyed your blog I check it several times a week.
Dawn Muench says
As a pediatrician and aunt of so many, and one who is taking a break from medicine after abruptly deciding to end a military career, your words and actions about work-life balance are like aloe to my sunburn. I post and share your blogs incessantly and learn something everytime I read or hear you speak. THANK you for doing what you do! It makes a difference!!
Wendy Sue Swanson, MD, MBE says
Thanks, Dr Muench. Best of luck with all of your transitions. Keep us posted here!
Chris Richardson says
I love your blog and have read it faithfully over the past 5 years! Your honesty and vulnerability always leave me inspired! Before my children, I wondered about work life balance now with a 7,6,3 year old I know that struggle! Harder than I ever imagined!!!! (Being married to an OBGYN, only highlights it more!) I feel so called to being a United Methodist clergy person but haven’t found that balance in the church! I’m working with Hospice and love it!!!! Thanks for sharing your life so freely! I’m a happy reader of your blog:)
